Shuswap Writer’s Group

Old books

There seems to be an abundance of artistic people in the Shuswap. Artists, artisans, musicians abound — and writers of poetry and prose. The Shuswap Writer’s Group has roots that go back twenty years and it is still vibrant today.

The group is an informal gathering of folks whose passion is to write. They meet bi-monthly to support and encourage each other in their writing adventures, and whether you are a serious writer or enjoy it as a hobby, you will find a place among friends in the group.

Nineteen enthusiastic writers getting together is a pretty impressive group of folks. They come from all walks of life, are all ages and have just as many reasons to want to tell their stories.

One member retired to White Lake from a career in law and loves reading and photography. Another, a poet, makes jewellery, paints and teaches yoga. One is inspired by her love of gardening and outdoor sports. Still another finds photography and music inspire him to write. Whatever may be the reason for picking up the pen, each writer finds the lure of writing absolutely impossible to resist.

In 2004, the Shuswap Writer’s Group published a book, Kaleidoscope IV, which is an anthology of fiction, non-fiction, adventure, humor, nostalgia and poetry and now is diligently working on Kaleidoscope V, which they plan on publishing in the near future.

If you have been writing all your life or if you have never written anything but always thought you would like to write, the Shuswap Writer’s Group would love to have you join them. Bring your lunch and a beverage and come to the Board Room at the rear of the Piccadilly Mall every 1st and 3rd Wednesday from 11am to 1pm. Contact Shirley DeKelver at 250-835-4544 if you would like more information.

Every 4th Friday of the month, the group hosts a Writer’s Coffee House which has become a popular meeting place, not only for writers, but artists and musicians as well. A warm welcome is extended to all those people who would like to share their writings by reading to a public audience. Contact Chris Schon at 250-832-0329 if you would like to know more about the Writer’s Coffee House or check out the group’s website at http://www.shuswapwritersgroup.weebly.com.
