Cell phone use draws attention to ‘drugs’

Distracted driving is landing a 42 year old Kelowna resident in court after he was stopped for talking on his cellular phone.

On March 8, 2010 at 8:40 p.m., a police officer observed the man driving his red Ford coupe and talking with his cell phone in hand. His vehicle was stopped by police at Springfield and Spall. While dealing with the driver the officer not only smelled the odour of marijuana, but saw some in plain view inside the vehicle.

The driver was arrested and his vehicle was searched. 7.5 grams of hashish oil, derived from marijuana, 32 grams of hashish resin, a solid, a small amount of marijuana bud, $1000 cash, and drug paraphernalia were seized.

In the end, the driver received a $167 violation ticket for using an electronic device while driving, as well as appearance notice to appear in court at the of July to face a charge of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.
