2 vehicle collision at Sicamous Narrows Bridge Hwy 1 claims life of two.

On Monday August 2nd, 2010, at 4:16 p.m. the Sicamous RCMP and Southeast District Traffic Services received a report of a fatal two vehicle collision which had occurred on the Trans Canada Highway 1 on the Sicamous Narrows Bridge, in Sicamous BC.
The collision involved a black Mazda 3 sedan registered in Alberta with four occupants traveling East bound and a BC registered Ford F150 pick up truck towing a tent trailer heading West bound. The collision occurred as the small compact car entered a corner wide and approached the bridge striking the right side bridge abutment and railing guard then into the oncoming lane and path of the pick up truck. The sedan was struck on the passenger side of the sedan which resulted in the front passenger and rear right side passenger sustaining the full impact of the collision.
The occupants were a family of four, with the father seated in the front seat and mother in the back passenger side seat. The vehicle was being driven by their 18 yr old son and the fourth passenger the younger son 14 yrs old seated to the rear of the driver. Both the mother and father died as a result of the injuries sustained and were pronounced deceased at the scene. The 14 yr old boy suffered multiple fractures and injuries and was Air Evac to Kamloops Royal Inlands Hospital. The 18 yr old driver sustained superficial injuries only and was immediately released from care at the Sicamous Hospital. All four were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision.
The husband and wife in the Ford F150, suffered minor injuries with the woman suffering the most serious of the two. Both husband and wife also received medical care at the Sicamous Hospital and were released. Both were wearing their seatbelts with vehicle airbags deploying in the collision.
The Sicamous RCMP and it’s Victim Services staff will be assisting the families affected.
No further updates including indentity of the parties nor places of origins will be made this evening regarding this incident.
August 3 update
RCMP are continuing their investigation into the fatal collision, confirming that the family in the black Mazda sedan involved was from Calgary Alberta. The couple driving in the Ford F150 pick up were from Merritt BC.
Investigators have spoken to several witnesses including those who were following the vehicle prior to the collision. This information with scene witness testimony and the physical evidence found at the scene has led investigators to consider the speed and the manner in which the vehicle was being driven as contributing factors. Investigators will also examine the mechanical integrity of the vehicle to prove or rule out the mechanical integrity of the vehicle as a contributing factor.
August 4 update
Sicamous RCMP are continuing their investigation into the August 2nd tragic double fatal motor vehicle collision, which occurred on the Sicamous Narrows Bridge Trans Canada Hwy 1.
The Sicamous RCMP and it’s Victim Services staff are continuing to assist the family involved in the August 2nd fatal vehicle crash where a family of four has lost both parents in the collision.
“In similar circumstances to the incident in Golden BC, we again have a motor vehicle collision that has deeply affected a family, with the loss of both parents. The family originates from Calgary Alberta” stated Cpl Dan Moskaluk.
The names of the deceased parents are:
- The father / front seat passenger: Ahmed, Medhat, IBRAHIM-BARAKAT, 56 yrs old.
- The mother / rear right side passenger: Soad Mohamed A. KHALIL, 52 yrs old.
The name of the 21 yr old son who was driving at the time of the collision is not being identified as charges have not been laid at this time. (Age correction: reported earlier as 18 yrs old).
The second son 14 yrs old, seated in the left side rear passenger at the time of the crash, remains in hospital in stable at the Kamloops Royal Inlands Hospital. (Name not being released).
Investigators are awaiting the completion and full report on the comprehensive mechanical inspection of the black Mazda 3 sedan. This inspection will assist in determining wether the failure of a mechanical component and or the general mechanical integrity of the vehicle may have been contributing factors.
