Bill Bennett, the BC government’s Energy Minister, was fired from his cabinet post today, Wednesday, November 17, 2010, as a result of his bold call for Premier Gordon Campbell to step down immediately from his leadership of the Liberal government. Finance Minister Colin Hansen told CBC news that the firing was made because Mr. Bennett was not a “team player”.
Minister Bennett has been known in the party for being one of the few members to risk censure for speaking his mind, and seems to have crossed some invisible political party line when he suggested that an interim leader should be appointed to take over while preparations are being made for a leadership vote on February, 26, 2011.
Mr. Campbell announced his resignation earlier as a result of mounting pressure from his party members in the wake of his mishandling of the HST; however he maintains that he has no intention of leaving until the party chooses a new leader at that time.
